Fall Is Coming: Are you Thriving or Just Surviving?

September 15

Fall is Coming!

And with it comes opportunities for us to pause and take a look at how we are thriving, or is it just surviving? I understand there are days when all those little things, I call loose ends, seem to pile up and make a trainwreck of our best intentions for the day.

Particularly as a Caregiver when those unexpected things happen; like when your loved one feels ill and you’re off to Urgent Care or the ER, or prescriptions haven't been called in when you make a trip to the pharmacy. Perhaps you received notice it's time to renew your health insurance, car inspection time, a birthday you notice you forgot to acknowledge.

Some days even the best organized calendars slip off the rails and you wonder, How Can I Take Care of Myself AND everything else?

As you may know by now, one of the ways I helped myself care for me was to keep a quarterly journal. Not just dates or notes on a calendar, although that's important, but setting goals for myself each quarter around how I can nurture myself while nurturing my ill loved one.

And…a change of seasons is a great time to begin. Pick one or two ideas on how you would like to nurture yourself as we move into fall. A practice you can begin…today or this weekend.

Why now? September 22 is the Fall Equinox here in the northern hemisphere. Equinoxes and Solstices are times of transformation. And the day before the Fall Equinox is World Gratitude Day. Two wonderful days for you to reflect on what you've felt grateful for these past few weeks, then turn to your Fall harvesting, creating ideas on how you would like to nurture yourself…for example:

  • Keep a gratitude journal- a brief note, once a week when you felt grateful for something that happened or your noticed
  • Set up a new daily or weekly practice that would bring you peace
  • Make a list of ideas you would like to do that would nurture you, then pick one to start right now.
  • Unlock the door to your Closet of Waiting and pick up an activity you once enjoyed doing and give it a try again.
  • Try something totally new you can do at home while you are caring for a loved one. It doesn't have to be a big project or a finished project, but something you've always wanted to try.

One small change as we move into fall may be the beginning of a new way to nurture yourself, care for yourself, and feel better.
